Si algo inspira a la banda española Malaspina es la música, algo que sus miembros siempre supieron que querían hacer. Sin embargo no se consideran especiales, “salvo que el ser normal o intentar no dejar de serlo se le considere algo especial”, explican. Su debut es un disco homónimo, el cual según los miembros de la agrupación, tiene una línea rockera, “una expresión sin complejos de lo que se necesita decir, desde la base mas popular, flexible y hasta bastarda”. Y es que ellos lo tienen claro: Toda influencia que sea intensa y popular aparece en su música. Así, su obra se nutre desde Bob Dylan a Nino Bravo, pasando por los Rolling Stones y Los Rodríguez, así como José Alfredo Jimenez y los Kinks. Pero siempre alejados de ser una copia. “Es un estilo definitivamente bastardo. Centrado en hacer buenas canciones, más que en tener un estilo o sonido concreto”. El material es además una suerte de biografía. Su falta de poses resulta refrescante.

El camino de Malaspina ha sido largo; desde que sus fundadores, Javier Zambudio y Pedro Ruiz “Pyta”, se conocieron trabajando en un proyecto para otro artista, hasta la búsqueda del resto de sus miembros, pasando por decenas de ensayos y un exitoso debut en el Auditorio Internacional de Torrevieja como teloneros del veterano grupo La Unión, en 2018. Luego, varios cambios de alineación, hasta llegar a la actual con Javier Zambudio, Pedro Ruiz “Pyta”, Santiago Palomera, José Antonio Zapata “Piki”  y Victor Meseguer. Pero por fortuna si bien sus miembros han variado, la buena recepción del público ha sido una constante, y para prueba sus tocadas en Murcia, Alicante, Albacete, Madrid y Sevilla. Aunque claro, eso era apenas el inicio. Tras su inicial serie de conciertos, la banda comenzó a ser reconocida no sólo por los fans sino por profesionales de la industria como Iván García-Pelayo, Juanjo Solana y Ramiro Martínez Quintanilla, quienes decidieron de forma pertinente crear un disco con algunas de las canciones de la banda y asesorar en la producción. El resultado: Malaspina, un disco que tardó en ver la luz debido a la crisis del Covid, y que fue publicado originalmente el 17 de junio de 2022, pero que gracias a once sólidas rolas con nombres como “Que la luna nos recoja”, “El mundo y yo”, “Estados de pánico” y “Entre el bar y el cuartel”, sigue más vigente que nunca en 2023, y amenaza con conquistar el resto de los países de habla hispana.

From Spain, Malaspina promotes their self-titled album

If anything inspires the Spanish band Malaspina, it’s music, something its members always knew they wanted to make. However, they don’t think of themselves as  special, “unless being normal or trying not to stop being normal is considered something special,” they explain. Their debut is a self-titled album, which according to the members of the group has a rock n’ roll vibe, “an expression without complexes of what needs to be said, from the most popular, flexible and even bastard basis.” They are clear: Any influence that is intense and popular appears in their music. Thus, their influences range from Bob Dylan to Nino Bravo, passing through The Rolling Stones and Los Rodríguez, as well as José Alfredo Jiménez and The Kinks. But always far from being a copy. “It’s definitely a bastard style. Focused on making good songs, rather than having a specific style or sound”, they explain. The material is also a kind of biography. Their lack of pretentiousness is refreshing.

The path of Malaspina has been long; since its founders, Javier Zambudio and Pedro Ruiz “Pyta”, met working on a project for another artist, to the search for the rest of its members, going through dozens of rehearsals and a successful debut at the Torrevieja International Auditorium as the opening act for the veteran group La Unión, in 2018. Later, they survived several line-up changes, until reaching the current one  with Javier Zambudio, Pedro Ruiz “Pyta”, Santiago Palomera, José Antonio Zapata “Piki” and Victor Meseguer. But fortunately, although its members have varied, the good reception of the public has been a constant, and to prove it they can enlist their gigs in Murcia, Alicante, Albacete, Madrid and Sevilla. Of course, that was just the beginning. After their initial series of concerts, the band began to be recognized not only by fans but also by industry professionals such as Iván García-Pelayo, Juanjo Solana and Ramiro Martínez Quintanilla, who decided to create an album with some of the songs from the band, and supervise it’s production. The result: Malaspina, an album that took long to see the light of day due to the Covid crisis, and which was originally published on June 17, 2022, but thanks to it’s eleven solid songs, with names like “Que la luna nos recoja”, “El mundo y yo”, “Estados de pánico” and “Entre el bar y el cuartel”, is still more relevant than ever in 2023, and threatens to conquer the rest of the Spanish-speaking countries.
